‘Not Another Drop’ Brent Peace March 2008

posted by Cllr Ralph Fox on 23 September 2008

Saturday was a lovely sunny day, perfect for a long walk; and that is what I and several hundred others were doing. Walking from Roundwood Park in Harlesden to Wembley Stadium, in memory of the 58 young people who have died from gun and knife crime in this borough since 1999.

At the Clock in Harlesden the march stopped and the names of all 58 victims were read out. It took a long time – and the time it took emphasised the terrible tragedy the death of each one of those youngsters represented. Fifty-eight is a shocking number, but add to that all the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, loved ones and friends whose lives have been shattered. And add to that all the relatives of the perpetrators of the crimes, who have been shattered and shamed by the terrible crimes of their young people. All this will add up to thousands - whole communities affected with sadness beyond comprehension.

The message being given out loud and clear was that these crimes must stop; and that the marching would continue year on year until it does. I pay tribute to all those who are working within Brent, organising, lobbying, raising awareness and supporting the victims families.
