When you leave school there are a number of career options to think about and questions to ask. Should you carry on to further education, find a job or take an apprenticeship? Talk to your family and friends about what might suit you or get some advice from professionals. There are several agencies in the Brent area and nationally who can help. Career Advice


Connexions Brent
Brent Connexions supports young people to remain in learning and fulfil their potential, providing information, advice, guidance and support for all those aged 13 to 19 (up to 25 for those with special needs). Brent Connexions Centre offers access to Connexions and has information on a range of issues that are important for young people to include information on careers, courses, jobs and training.

Connexions Direct
Offers information on a wide range of topics as well as confidential advice and practical help. The service is available from 8:00am to 2:00am 7 days a week on 080 800 13219 or visit their website www.connexions-direct.com

Prospects
Personal Advisers (PAs) based within Prospects provide education, employment, training and careers Connexions services. They work with schools, colleges and community services to provide careers education and personal support programmes.

Head to Head Training
St. Raphaels based registered charity runs the e2e programme for young people aged 16-18 who want to develop their interests, maximise their skills and get help to progress to an Apprenticeships, Further Education or a job, preferably with training leading to a Level 2 qualification.

Apprenticeships


Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships are a good way to get work place training while getting paid to do so. Here are a few links which provide information about apprenticeships.
  • Apprenticships.org.uk - All you need to know about apprenticeships, includes a list of over 180 apprenticeship schemes.
  • Camden ITEC Youth Training - Full-time apprenticeship programmes for 16 to 24 year olds (even if you are in employment). The two main apprenticeship areas offered are in business administration and customer service.
  • Worktrain - the national jobs and learning site

Work placements


If you're unsure as to what you want to do consider doing a work placement. They are a great way to find out a little about the world of work. You'll get:
  • An insight into the world of work.
  • The chance to learn new skills.
  • The chance to meet new people and talk to them about what their jobs are really like.
  • The chance to test out whether a particular type of job is what you might like to do for a future career.
  • The chance to put into practice skills you are learning at college or school.
  • Useful references and skills which can be recorded on CV’s.
  • Increased self-confidence and independence.

Brent Council Communication and Student Suppport - offers work experience placements for young people in schools, and for local people attending training for work schemes.

The Engineering Education Scheme - provides young people with an insight into the world of engineering.

The National Council for Work Experience - promotes, supports and develops quality work experience for the benefit of students, employers and the economy. Site includes a work placement search.

The Trident Trust - a national charity which offers information and advice on how to prepare for a work placement. Local office - Brent & Harrow Work Experience Team,

Year in Industry - places pre-university students in year long placements relevant to their proposed degrees.

Work placements aren't just one way, employers get the chance to:
  • support a young person to learn new skills and encourage them to think about the sort of career that they want in future;
  • promote a positive work experience for a young person.
